1992 OCLC CJK User Group Executive Board Minutes

Tuesday, March 31, 1992

Washington Hilton and Towers

Washington, D.C.

Present:

James Cheng, Teruko Kyuma Chin, Joy Kim, Karl Lo, Eugene Wu (Chair), and Andrew Wang (guest)

The informal working dinner took place at 6:30, hosted by Mr. Andrew Wang of OCLC. The Chair reported that Mr. Cheng Heng-hsiung, Member-At-Large, was unable to attend and sent his regrets. He also thanked James Cheng for the mailing of meeting notices.

The Chair informed the group that he had received two phone calls complaining about not receiving invitations to the Program Committee meeting. He indicated to the callers that this was a local communication matter that should be resolved locally between the official OCLC liaison of the institution and the head of the CJK unit.

The Executive Board reviewed the Program Committee meeting's agenda, and suggested some changes in the order of agenda items according to their priorities. The agenda of the membership meeting was also reviewed in an attempt to eliminate unnecessary overlap.

Mr. Wang said that he plans to visit Korea and Japan in May 1992, and Taiwan and Hong Kong in June or July, 1992.

Mr. Wang mentioned that the Library of Congress is in charge of the CJK CONSER project, and OCLC is its host database. No policy for CJK serials has been adopted yet. The OCLC Updates meeting will have a representative from LC CONSER staff.

Mr. Wu asked Mr. Wang to speak on the issue of the OCLC-RLG record exchange. Mr. Wang apologized for the way the problem was handled. He said that OCLC's intention was not to discontinue the exchange, but rather, to do it in a different way.

Mr. Karl Lo said that Academia Sinica, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and UCSD can access to one another's OPAC via the internet.

As possible sources for database expansion, Shen-lien's and Waseda University's tapes were mentioned. The quality of the records and the cost are major issues to be explored.

The Executive Board reviewed the draft letter prepared by OCLC for the CJK Plus field test application, and offered some advice for change.

The next Executive Board meeting schedule was tentatively set for September 15, 1992. Mr. Andrew Wang was thanked for hosting the dinner.
