1996 Executive Board Minutes

1996 OCLC CJK Users Group Executive Board

Saturday, July 6, 1996

Javits Convention Center

New York, N.Y.

Attendees:

James Cheng, University of California, Los Angeles

Hideyuki Morimoto, University of California, Berkeley

Wen-ling Liu, Indiana University

Abraham Yu, University of California, Irvine

Minutes:

1. OCLC CJK Users Group WWW Site:

After Yu receives a WWW site URL address from the University of California, Irvine, it will be reported to the OCLC CJK Users Group Executive Board members and Gary Houk of OCLC for review of the files prepared for the Group.

2. General Membership Meeting minutes from April 13, 1996:

Cheng will finalize and distribute the minutes from the April 13, 1996 General Membership Meeting held in Hawaii, prepared by Wen-ling Liu of Indiana University, to the OCLC CJK Users Group membership by the end of July. The text will also be mounted to the OCLC CJK Users Group WWW site.

3. Report on cooperative analytics:

Liu submitted her article on the OCLC cooperative analytics project for Chinese big sets to the Journal of East Asian Libraries. This article will be published in the upcoming issue of the Journal.

4. Communication with OCLC:

Cheng will communicate with Gary Houk to request OCLC's updates on the following issues to be returned to Cheng by October 1996:

(1) OCLC CJK Prism functionality, together with the number of and progress with participants in the pilot project (Cheng will stress to Houk that it would be to OCLC's advantage to develop a CJK OPAC functionality regardless of the number of responses received at OCLC to participate in this pilot project);

(2) Vernacular character dictionary enhancement project;

(3) Vernacular character inclusion in CJK name authority records;

(4) "Display", in addition to searching, pinyin as well as Wade-Giles romanizations in catalog records;

(5) Pricing structure:

  1. (a) While the hidden search costs associated with the CJK Prism pilot project are understandable, a possibility of ultimate reduction in CJK Prism use charges should be sought; and (b) the CJK Prism software licensing terms should be aligned with the regular non-CJK Prism licensing agreements, i.e., a site-license rather than a terminal-license; and

(6) OCLC activities in East Asian countries.

No separate meeting shall be scheduled for the Executive Board to meet with OCLC staff members this Fall.

5. CJK database for mounting onto OCLC:

Responses to polling of potential CJK database for loading onto OCLC have been rather minimal so far. Morimoto will check with Philip Melzer and Karen Wei whether they have received input in this regard from OCLC CJK Users Group members.

6. 1997 meeting in Chicago:

A clear preference was witnessed of a one-session meeting format instead of a two-session format for the 1997 meeting in Chicago, given that there will be an additional open Forum between OCLC and RLIN CJK users in Chicago. A time for the OCLC CJK Users Group meeting will be decided after a membership polling is made.

Some possible topics mentioned for the open Forum between OCLC and RLIN CJK users include:

  1. (1) CJK cooperative analytics project;

  2. (2) CJK retrospective conversion;

  3. (3) CJK record exchange; and

  4. (4) vernacular inclusion in CJK name authority records.

Respectfully submitted,

Hideyuki Morimoto
